As many of you know amidst my diligent studies and research to bring ways of earnestly generating income online [preferably passive income as my first choice] along with moving to another state my days have been filled with change: seeing new places and routes to travel to and from the usual mundane errand locales AND cruising web sites and business offerings to share with my readers.

The physical ‘newness’ is one that will quickly pass as I navigate to and from the bank, library, lakes [I now live in a city with at least 4 lakes in it – yaaaaay!], grocery store, electronic/office supply chain [yes, I have to get my fix of that at least every other week] and so on. However, the ‘newness’ of viable internet business offerings is an entirely different matter.

First of all, I browse countless lead stories and articles for hours on a daily basis looking for legitimate offerings so that when I find something ‘new’ and solid, while being comparatively simple to integrate into an existing or start up online business, I’m always excited to investigate it further. However, finding ‘new’ and solid ways for the everyday person like myself to get involved in is becoming a rarity. The internet has become inundated with countless sites that boast and brag, “This is THE secret to success! You can make $100s of dollars instantly without doing anything except paying your membership money. . “ blah blah blah. Countless. In fact there are so many of these sites and so many people inviting me to these sites I’m beginning to get good at ’smelling’ them before I even click on the link!

What is disturbing though, is the fact that many, many people are seriously looking to generate both passive and active income via the internet and quite a few of these websites are designed to take advantage of that fact. Because so many people are without jobs altogether, while others are struggling with income from low wage paying jobs and need additional financial ‘flow’ in order to exist more comfortably between paydays, the need for access to reliable income information and methods is crucial. Then there are the sensible people that are doing ‘ok’ with their current jobs and/or finances and are looking for ways to supplement their income as they venture into a self-employment modality. All things being equal, even the ‘greedy’ are looking for ways to make more money as safely and swiftly as possible without having to add an additional 5 to 10 hours to their working day [including travel, etc.]. Therefor, many unscrupulous and even just opportunistic ‘business’ ventures are being promoted to get the attention, commitment and investment of often times scarce ‘excess’ money in order to participate in a ‘better’ income generation vehicle as these ‘businesses’ claim to be. While posing as a legitimate business and offering ’secrets’ or ‘proven’ methods of amassing great wealth is not illegal, in many cases it is extremely unethical!

There are the sites that ‘insure’ a rapid income growth and long term residual income if you simply join the ‘network.’ Here, the membership is generally free, and you earn ‘points’ for exchanging website information with other members. These are actually relatively good opportunities for marketing your goods or services however it should be noted that most other ‘members’ are looking to do the exact same thing and many are in the exact same financial predicament – swimming upstream in order to make it to higher ground and avoid drowning in a sea of debt!

Yet it is the sites that boast the ‘priceless’ package of training, marketing and product materials that are the absolute worse [in a lot of cases] when it comes to ’smoke and mirrors’ in order to stupefy people into buying into their ‘team!’ Looking at these sties carefully, I find they offer 4 or 5 eBooks, 5 to 10 CDs or DVDs, 2 or 3 software programs, access to members only webinars, teleconferences, seminars, workshops and conventions all at the very low prices of $____. And that is the catch: for those that have that much time on their hands wherein they can read, view, study, internalize and put into practice all the pertinent information being offered by these ‘opportunities’ one may as well enroll in a local community college or certificate program! The college or cert program would prove to be a lot less stressful because you know up front what to expect to be taught, how much time it will take to get necessary assignments done and turned in, you have access to not only the instructors but counselors, classmates and tutors, etc. And there is the assured guarantee that at the successful completion of a business college course or certificate program there will be either a diploma, certificate of completion or degree!

Now don’t misunderstand my position on all of this ‘online wealth for the average Jane/Joe’ business ventures: I’m not against them per se, I’m just leery that far too many naive or trusting individuals aren’t carefully reading between the lines in order to recognize that the real benefit offered by these sites are at best, tips and tricks from seasoned internet business people and the opportunity to connect with others willing to pay for those tips and tricks! Some of the sites that I investigated actually have good references [and cost a pretty penny to join] and can offer some practical guidance to would be and start up entrepreneurs. However, those sites are few and far between. . .

If you’re serious about working from home or working for yourself in a small business environment be honest with yourself regarding the skills you already have; the time you have to invest in gaining additional skills [if needed for the type of venture you wish to operate] and the cost of investing both your time and finances into training to become a successful business person. Then if you really would rather get training online by a ’seasoned’ professional or even join an online community of business professionals or entrepreneurs by all means do so with your eyes wide open!

Affiliate Marketing [aka Affiliate Programs]:

What it is and Why it Works

Starting an online or internet business can be either exciting, inclusive of it’s challenges or daunting and somewhat overwhelming as to what to do first and what to expect as a result of those efforts. Aside from the obvious need of having an online business location, also known as a website, there are a few things to take into consideration before launching your multi-million dollar venture.

1. Do you have a needed product or service to sell? If the answer is yes then you’ll be more interested in my upcoming article ‘How to Sell Effectively Online.’ Of course reading the rest of THIS article can only make you wiser. . . If the answer is no, then you are in the right place at the right time to learn about selling other people’s products and getting paid to do so.

2. Do you have an interest in selling products that you use and or want to use on a daily basis? This question is actually designed to help you think about what types of products most people are looking online to purchase: in recognizing that the average shopper is no different than yourself you can choose business partners, also known as affiliate programs, whose products you are familiar and comfortable with reviewing and recommending to others. The bonus to this is there are often discounts and buying incentives offered to affiliates [you, the seller] for personal purchases.

3. Are you willing to learn how to manage a website? If the answer is no go ahead and read the rest of the article so that you’ll be able to share the information with someone you know or meet, because invariably many more people will be turning to online self-employment in the next few years. Managing a website is extremely simple for basic Affiliate program marketing AND can also be a way to share knowledge and advise to others if you use some of the many free features offered in website hosting such as blogs and/or forums.

Now that you’ve answered the three most important questions regarding starting an online business let’s get you headed in the best direction to generate passive income.

 

What Affiliate Marketing Is

Affiliate marketing is the use of your website to drive traffic to the website of your business partners – it is a form of online marketing, which quite a few advertisers are still overlooking. Affiliate marketing has not gained the popularity of SEO [search engine optimization] or e-zines, e-mail, RSS capture or ‘pay-per-click:’ it is a solid long term income generation tool and plays an important role in the success of an online business.

Being able to market someone else’s product is less demanding than designing, creating and/or manufacturing a product of your own and it doesn’t require stocking inventory, managing a catalog, shipping and handling, etc. You will have to come up with ideas for selling products, however most partners offer limitless affiliate training by way of webinars, emails, videos, conferences and the like. Affiliate marketing requires a lot of thinking, growth, and change. With a positive outlook and determination for success, along with a willingness to use fresh approaches ,you’ll be able to reap the benefits of affiliate marketing.

Building Your Internet Business

Going back to thinking of the products that you’d honestly recommend to others you can get started with clearly defining your market. Your market should look like you, your spouse, your children, family, friends and neighbors because that is the approach to take with your customers in order to build lasting relationships with them. Now you can focus on building an information-rich website that your market will WANT to visit. By only offering products that are relevant to your target market you can utilize your website to establish your integrity and provide expertise and knowledge to your customers.

As an online affiliate marketing entrepreneur it pays to create a strong email promotional campaign. So in the beginning stages of building your website be sure to design a strong opt-in offer containing useful and insightful FREE information pertinent to what your visitors are looking for. As your business grows continue to utilize email containing more useful free information in order to maintain the customer service relationship that you’ve created. Being consistent with serving your customers by sharing news, tips and product reviews, etc. with them develops a trust and respect for your information so that your email customers begin to look forward to getting updates from you. AND the beauty of that is your customers will more than likely share your emails and/or newsletters with THEIR email lists!

Another major plus for developing an affiliate program business is the building of a ‘down line’ sales force. In the world of internet business in terms of affiliate marketing [as well as other ventures] it only takes one or two outstanding down line members to bring HUGE success to YOUR business. The more people that replicate your online business strategies and success the MORE income generated for you! Providing great customer service via the email, blog and other strategies that you’ll learn to use can easily inspire that one or two stellar beginning entrepreneurs in your down line to build their own internet empire allowing you to receive a lifetime of residual income!

Selecting Reputable Affiliate Programs/Companies

There are far too many internet scams and fly-by-night companies that are ripping honest people off every day. A few things you want to look for when selecting affiliate programs or partners is brand name recognition: how long has the company been in business? Are there any complaints against them in the better business bureau [online version]? Are the products they sell brand name? These are the questions and considerations that have to be made prior to contracting with affiliate programs or companies. Also, at NO TIME should you pay money to become an affiliate marketer! If a company wants you to work for them as an affiliate they are NOT going to ask you to PAY them! Avoid any company that asks you to pay to become an affiliate AND report them to your local state department of commerce immediately.

Working Your Business

Affiliate marketing is not the “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” bringing instant online riches. It is a proven avenue to make substantial earnings promoting other people’s products via your website, email, newsletters, blogs and other technology campaigns.

Regardless of what type of online business or work at home venture you choose to engage in, the word ‘work’ is the operative: don’t expect to slap up a website, add a few affiliate links and make tons of money doing nothing! Your success will require your time and effort – however, if being able to walk around in your pajamas as you review a few products and make recommendations based on your findings to your customers and potential customers appeals to you, then that’s a lot of the work you’ll find yourself doing once you become an affiliate marketer!

Being Self Employed – How To Set-up a Business Website

Alright! You’ve got your first choice in domain names, a top notch – dirt cheap web hosting company selected WITH a simple to use control panel all with very little hassle except for narrowing down your choices! With that accomplished you may only be reading this next installation for amusement purposes or even to pick up a few tips you hadn’t thought of! For the rest of us, here are the next 3 important steps to setting up an award winning business website:

4. Decide on the design style and layout. Most of us know what web sites catch our attention and which don’t! It’s a wise practice to search online for sites offering the same types of products or services that you have to sell. Why???? So that you can see and note any trends – in order to ’stand out’ in a crowd you first have to know what the crowd is ‘wearing!’ Once you’ve checked out the ‘norm,’ you have a good list of design ideas that you DO want on your site and that you DON’T want to imitate! I recommend visiting at least 10 sites to really see a comprehensive display in your business category.

5. Invest in site design software. If you’ve already ’signed on the dotted line’ with a web hosting company that offers a simple build-it-yourself software package in its control panel then you’re ahead of the site design software issue. Web site design software comes in 3 very distinct levels: Simple – which often isn’t really simple but has very little room for customization and or design ‘freedom; Basic – which costs any where from $19.95 to $200 and offers lots of templates, graphics, web objects [flash files – you know the web pages that slide words and pictures into place, etc.], audio and video capacity, etc. and ‘Techie‘ [which is MY name for the type, you may call it something different such as 'advanced,' 'professional,' or 'expert'] – Techie software offers everything that Basic offers with the added abilities to take quite a bit of time to learn and master where the trade off comes in building a super top notch site that rivals Canon, Sprint or even Greyhound! I have an affinity for Serif WebPlus [Basic], for it’s ease of use and outstanding tutorials, templates and ‘add-ons!’ I’ve also used Microsoft Publisher [2003 version] and recommend any number of low cost WYSIWYG [What You See Is What You Get] software offered at any local Office Depot, Office Max, Best Buy or Circuit City, etc.. There are also great quality Simple and Basic wysiwyg software offerings for FREE listed at TuCows, SnapFiles or The Free Site to name a few freeware/shareware sites. For those of you that are ‘method based’ in your business approach the freeware/shareware is the way to go: you can download free demo trials AND unlimited use software that may prove to be simple and to the point for a very good start off website design. For the ’savvy shopper’ such as myself, the freeware/shareware sites are my first stop to find test software and templates in order to get a true picture of what my sites can look like. . . .

6. Investigate some of the FREE web hosting sites – they offer a variety of easy-to-use site templates and extras such as site counters, blogs, forums, forms, shopping carts, etc. There is generally a limited amount of pages that can be hosted on these sites but since you’re creating an entry level site for the most part, this option can be the best and easily affordable one for many. Some free web hosting services are: BlinkWeb, MyHosting24/7, eSmartStart and WebNG. Thousands if not millions of start up internet businesses as well as established small and online businesses utilize FREE web hosting services AND once your business outgrows the limitations of the bandwidth or number pages [you'll be adding so many products and new services due to your phenomenal success!] copying and moving your site to a dedicated paid hosting service will be virtually ‘child’s play!’ As an incentive many of the free hosting services offer the ‘free’ sites with hopes that once the need arises customers will upgrade to their paid accounts – and if you are comfortable with the backend [control panel] along with the customer support or whatever that the free account gives you then upgrading is one way of ‘giving back’ to the provider!

For me, knowing my options and becoming familiar with those options is a prime factor in decision making – I not only like HAVING a road map, I like having a general idea of what’s ON the map before I set off on the road! Such is the reward of living long enough to have garnered some wisdom after being a very young and impulsive ‘youth!’ Gone are the days of having a vague notion of where point ‘b’ is and breaking out in a blaze of smoke without knowing whether or not the roads to ‘Rome’ were under construction. . . . .

So, I could have listed the free software and site hosting services first, however, without being given the impetus to think about where you want your site to take your business, that would have been just another ‘hype’ bit of info which is all too prevalent online these days. Which leads me to another great parting shot: Take your time and read between the lines – it’s your life, time and business AND only YOU can do it justice!
