Being Self-Employed: Paid-To-Read Sites Update

Since my last article regarding generating money via reading emails and ads [Why Would Anybody Pay Me To Surf The Net?], I’ve come to learn quite a bit about the ‘paid to read email’ industry! It is quite fascinating and something that an energetic, resourceful WebPreneur may want to invest in. . .

After my first entry into ‘paid-2-read’ the first thing I noticed was that there were countless PTR sites using the sites I was signed up for to solicit members! Some of them were offering very high sign-up bonuses [a few of which I couldn't resist] that seemed absolutely impossible to be true. I joined two such sites just to see how it would pan out come pay out time. . .

The two PTR sites that I joined had less than 2,000 ’stated’ members on the home page. I say ’stated’ because I’m not sure just how truthful those [or any site's] stats are, yet the caveat for the high sign-up bonus was for all those that joined before the membership hit the 5,000 mark. Upon signing up, I went scrambling to alert my friends to the possibility of high earnings by clicking and reading – as long as the sites were legit of course.

What I’ve found over the past 2+ weeks is that those very entry level sites have grown their membership exponentially, however the most interesting find is that the quality [as in deep advertising budgets] of some of THEIR advertisers and sponsors has increased right along with the ability to deliver 5,000 plus dedicated, opt-in, potential consumers!

Me being me, I had already looked into some of the software being used by the sites: that generally can be found at the bottom of the home page listed something like, “powered by ___.” Even with that information, I was still very skeptical that any site could/would pay out the type of minimums these sites boast. Now that I see how a site can actually go from 1 to 350 members in 32 – 48 hours and grow by leaps and bounds in a very short time [mostly by advertising on other PTR sites :)] it is now very evident that barring greed and chicanery, these sites can easily afford to pay the advertised payout minimums!

So, I decided to do a Winzy search for ‘PTR’ just to see what type of comments would come up. . . What I found actually knocked my socks off: there are software programs being sold that allow the ‘clickers’ or ‘readers’ to have all of their PTR sites downloaded to their desktop or central inbox for ease of management, tracking earnings, and many other tasks. Paid-2-Read and Paid-2-Click [PTR and PTC] is EXTREMELY big business and appears to be the next big online advertising vehicle.

Again, I must state that the genius of PTR and PTC is top notch: pay people to sit and read ads and emails about products, services and whatever else! It’s cheaper than a Super Bowl commercial and via the internet has about the same audience capacity! Go click on that!

In the beginning of the article I mused that anyone looking to launch a Money ‘Da’ Easy Way eBusines/eCommerce venture would do well to consider PTR. As my time and energy resources are limited, I am and would positively be available as a consultant and even co-partner in such a venture. You know where to find me. . .

Minding Your Business — Harness Your Mind

A very caring and sincere friend of mine called me in exasperation on the other day. The conversation went like this:

“I just don’t know why anyone would want to steal my identity! I’m not rich or famous and work hard to earn every DIME of my money! This is terrible – now I have to get new credit card numbers and email address and passwords!”

“Wow, that’s terrible. What happened?” I had to ask, naturally, because that’s what friends are for – calling on the phone, sharing your woes and, in my case, forcing them to be distracted from the current project that is already behind schedule. . .

“Well, I’ve been joining forums, newsgroups and some of those paid-to-read websites online – like the ones you recommend to people. And I opened a few online accounts to shop at, in order to buy discounted products – you know the way you always recommend.”

Why was I beginning to feel like whoever it was that had stolen her identity was suspected of being in collusion with me? “Oh, I see. So what happened?” What else could I say?

“Someone got my email address, my passwords and my credit card information too! They spent up all that I had on my cards, spammed some websites and sent emails to my friends with pornography in them!”

Of course I was stunned. “How in the world did that happened? Exactly what happened? Did you get a virus on your computer or some malware? You should have called me if you were having problems with your computer – generally they’ll act differently when something has been downloaded. ..” I trailed off knowing that getting me on the phone is about as easy as sliding uphill – wearing a suit of spiked clothing! Yet, had anyone called and left me a distress message, I’d have responded ASAP – within 5 or 6 hours!

“Well, you know when those sign up forms ask for your email address?”

“Yes.”

“And then they ask for your password?”

“Yes.”

“Well, I put in my password.”

“Oh. Uh, you put in YOUR email password on the application website?” Though I HAD mumbled to myself on many occasions that the way those forms presented the data fields any body could slip and put their personal email password there. Even I had to catch myself the first couple of times. . .

“Yes, I thought that’s what they wanted. . .Anyway, someone passed my email information to someone else and then they got into my email account!”

“So how did they get your credit card info and other stuff like that?” This was getting very strange to me, I admit there is very little available space in my personal idiocy domain for drama – let’s get to the point so we can solve the problem!

“Well, I didn’t store my passwords and account info in an encrypted file on my desktop, you know the way you always recommend? I just couldn’t stop and pull up the file, make up a code for the account and do all of that, so I simply emailed my credit card and other account information to myself! It’s way easier for me to open my email to get that info – you know I really like the Thunderbird email client that you recommended.”

“Oh. So, you put in your email password with your email address in an application for an online account for whatever it was THEN your email account got accessed and your identity got used. Is that what your telling me? Some jerk employee took advantage of you and now you’re credit is on the run?” This was waaaaaay past my drama quotient – I’m planning to not answer my phone for 90 days or more. . .

“Yes. Most of it is being charged off. But I had some very PRIVATE stuff in my email. And the porn stuff that got emailed out – I don’t even like porn!”

STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP.

This is a fictitious scenario. Over the course of signing up for a zillion different memberships, accounts, mailing lists, etc. I find that the most frequently used form first asks for your email address then, password. Anyone that isn’t paying attention would simply put their email password in the box provided and that’s the upshot of this posting: PAY ATTENTION TO ALL QUESTIONS, FINE PRINT AND INFORMATION REQUESTED OF YOU IN CYBERSPACE AND IN PRINT.

It only takes one slip to fall and really hurt yourself. Mind your business, as in be mindful when doing business because as the saying goes, A mind is a terrible thing to waste. . .

Don’t Be Fooled: Reading ads and surfing the net is BIG Business

As you all know, I’ve been working diligently exploring simple, FREE and easy ways to generate income online thru various opportunities. Recently I shared some information regarding reading emails and/or ads in order to earn money while surfing the internet.

Someone asked me if there was, “REALLY companies that PAID people to read emails and ads???” I found this to be an interesting, yet all to common response to the notion that personal time and attention is EXTREMELY precious therefor making both very valuable! I began thinking about the countless looks of sheer amazement I get from people all the time when during the course of a conversation they mention their favorite TV or radio commercial and I have absolutely no awareness of the commercial and frequently the product! Even when I watched TV for 2 to 3 hours a day a couple of times a week, I NEVER watched commercials on purpose! Commercials provided bathroom, refrigerator, check-what’s-cooking-on-the-stove or see-if-the-baby is awake breaks – while a few could be entertaining my patience for scripted performances to separate me from my money was then, and still is practically zero! Of course these days, I only see commercials when visiting family or friends as I’ve given away my ‘idiot box’ more than 2 years ago and I manage to find other creative ways to amass my quota of idiot clutter without television. . .

At any rate, while searching for free software with which to generate mailing lists along with creating a newsletter I happened upon a site, Zinester, that offered both mailing list services AND directory listing for newsletters, aka ezines! In order for me to get a few good ideas for my newsletter layout, etc. I decided to click on some of the ezine listings in the Zinester free directory and what did I find? A very interesting and lucrative pay-to-read email and advertising site that I hadn’t come across before.

The ezine author was giving rave reviews of the site, Inbox Dollars and I had to check it out for myself: it was purported that the payout for screening some of the advertisers was anywhere from $1 to $5 and the minimum cashout was $5000.00! What actually challenged me was the fact that she also mentioned it took her less than 2 weeks to generate $5000.00 from reading emails and/or ads!

While investigating Inbox Dollars [of course I signed up :)], I noticed that the majority of THEIR advertisers were, drum roll maestro, paid to read email/ads companies! This of itself was eye opening yet the real astonishing thing was that nearly 75% of these sites were paying $1 and upwards of $20 to read emails and/or ads! All I kept thinking was, “How are these sites such a secret?” and “Why aren’t more people reading emails and/or ads for cash?”

As I signed up for more of the higher paying ’screening’ sites, I began musing over how it was they could afford to pay such decent amounts of money to their membership. Naturally the answer revealed itself by the third sign up. . .

These sites are “billboards” of the new millennium and their ‘hook’ is they can GUARANTEE a set number of ad/email views to their customers [advertisers] based on their membership rolls! Many of them are scrambling to amass 10s of 1000s of members because, naturally the more members they have, the higher the ad rates they can charge! And with their sites being accessed by 100s to 1000s of members daily, most of these sites can afford to share the ad revenues to the members – easily!

So that’s the ‘catch.’ Offer sign up bonuses to members, I saw bonuses as high as $8000 delimited to the first 5000 members, etc., get the ‘viewer’ levels high as quickly as possible and offer/deliver happy to oblige audiences to potential advertising clients! Brilliant! [Why didn't I think of that???] If you’re still wondering how that financially plays out here’s a likely scenario:

  1. Initially sell ad space at a rate of $7 per ‘click.’

  2. Recruit ‘viewers’ by offering to pay them $2 per ‘view.’

  3. When membership reaches critical mass, say 1000 members increase the ad space cost.

  4. There’s absolutely NO personnel, office space, etc. overhead because the entire business is maintained online and every ‘member’ is an independent contractor – not an employee, plus the pc/laptop that has the site on it could easily be in someone’s bedroom, kitchen, garage, etc.

  5. The cost of server space to host these websites is less than $7 per month so even with only 20 clients at the initial $7 rate, an almost 2000% profit has been made in the first month alone.

  6. Paying out 1 to 2% of the profit will definitely offset taxes and still leave a hefty profit for the sites’ owners.

Now while my scenario is very far from being mathematically exact, the ratios and format are clearly what’s taking place. Therefor, paying people to read emails and/or ads is something that any smart, savvy and shrewd WebPreneur would do in order to run a successful internet ‘advertising agency!’ This is internet marketing at its BEST: guaranteed audience for the clients; paid membership for ‘reviewing’ products and/or services! And it gets better on most of the sites – purchases or sign ups to clients’ sites/businesses also accrues earnings: and if you shop online anyway this is a great way to get a built in ‘rebate’ or ‘discount’ for your purchases!

As the quintessential Queen of, “I don’t have time to waste looking at commercials!” I must say that I’m impressed with the payouts of some of these new and innovative ‘commercial outlet’ sites! To their credit many require you view their sponsors’ sites for 60 seconds and less!

I also know that the internet has fads that come and go however, marketing and audiences are the bread and butter for nearly all businesses in existence! While the going is good I’m advising everyone to find their favorite commercials online – and get paid for doing so!

Below is a list of 2 sites that are still recruiting to build their membership to the ‘critical mass’ level of 5000 and are pitching $1000 and $2000 sign up bonuses to all that sign up before the quota is met:

  1. Money-Mails

  2. Red-Mails

Now, of course there IS the possibility of scams, hackers and just plain ne’er do wells in cyberspace that all of us need to be on the alert for. Luckily, yours truly, is always thinking about the flip side to all that she brings to the table for sharing and I also did some investigating into fraudulent email/ad pay to view sites so that it can’t be said that I willfully provided ’shaky’ information to my readers. There is a website, GTPBoycott that exists solely to gather information and expose those sites that are unscrupulous, etc. There are listings of sites cited for not paying as contracted along with sites on the ‘Watch List’ for those sites with five or fewer complaints. I found the listings to be recent [for the most part] and suggest that a thorough web search be made before joining any collective wherein earnings OR sales are offered. Further, none of the sites mentioned in this article appear in either list – which I checked AFTER viewing the sites and researching them.

That’s it in a nutshell: anyone can earn money, as in get paid, to view emails and/or ads from quite a few reputable sites just by investing 2 to 4 hours per day, week or month: it also increases your payout for recruiting others to join the sites, this is known as ‘referrals,’ however it is actually building a down line of active participants that generate additional revenues for your account.

Once upon a time, nearly 36 years ago, I had quite a bit of leisure time on my hands as I was expecting my first born child. While planning the nursery, and buying the layette I often watched TV as I scoured the mail order catalogs for bargains and items on my wish list. To be completely honest, I can’t remember one, not one, of the commercials that I may have viewed back then – however, had I been paid to watch and pay attention, I bet I could manage to recall and even sing a jingle or two. . .

Which just goes to show, your mind, memory and/or intellectual ‘mental’ property is just as precious as your bank account and BOTH need to be increased on a regular basis!

Blogging 4 Pay: Money “Da” Easy Way!

I’ve got a few friends that care for me deeply – I say that because most have known me for at least a decade; most always have lots of news about their lives to share with me; most accept that I’m a ‘traveler’ by nature and subject to move out of town every 3 to 4 years and most of these great people put up with me NOT being a telephone ‘chatter’ therefor having to leave brief update messages several times before I can carve out the time to call them back. True love indeed! Now I must say in my own defense that once I do get around to calling any of my lifelong buddies OR should they happen to catch me while I’m sitting by the phone doing something that will allow me to split my attention and listen to their story, they are rewarded with my devout attention and duly earned concern/interest in all that they’ve been wanting to share. Most of them hold my ear captive for a couple of hours and for me that’s my fill for another 6 to 9 months! Eternal true love for certain!

Lately, I’ve been encouraging 2 of my girl friends to start writing a monetized blog as a way to share what’s on their mind with folks [freeing up the demand for my attention] and earn some easy money. Friend #1, we’ll call her Sue, has experience writing for AP back in the day when she lived over seas, so her passion for writing is truly something that needs to be honored. Friend #2, we’ll call her Laina, has such an incredible gift of gab, especially for spinning a colorful tale about her day or even her trip to the local flea market, allowing herself to write those great tales in a monetized blog or email would be a practical launching pad for a successful career in novel or short story writing! So I keep asking and wondering, “Why not write a blog?” and have finally come to accept what’s keeping my friends and far too many creative, talented and imaginative people from writing those thoughts, feelings and observations that they conscript their dearest friend(s) or closest family member(s) to hear.

Fear. There are five (5) major fears that prevent exceptionally fanciful people from embarking upon a pleasant and income generating ’social’ writing campaign:

I. Fear of being ‘good enough.’ The first person to ever draw a pictograph on a stone wall had no guideline or inner critic to tell them they were doing it ‘wrong’ or ‘right’ for that matter! So this ‘good enough’ thing that has been drilled into most of us is something that we don’t have to embrace to the extent it blocks us from being at peace with the utilization of our creative gifts. Of course your ‘good enough’ because you are the only you there is, therefor your story, thoughts, observations, etc. are unique – no two people living have experienced the exact same thing the exact same way and will TELL it the same. Celebrate your individuality and know that your writing will not only be ‘good enough’ it will be outstanding, simply because its one of a kind!

II. Fear of being ‘read.’ Once you write something and post it in a blog or email or article online it will get read. It may get read by a lot of people, depending on how you promote it, where you post it, and how it’s ‘packaged!’ Funny stuff gets read and passed around a lot faster than doom and gloom, however there’s a market for doom and gloom in many of the online blog communities!

III. Fear of NOT being read. Anyone that I know will definitely get their blog, article or email read immediately because, my lifestyle is such that reading is faster and more practical for me to do than talking on the phone! Make sure you notify the ‘readers’ that you know that you’ve written something and provide them a link to it! Most of them will read it – some may not read it right away and there’s nothing you can do about that – however the upside is most will also pass it to those on their email list as a courtesy and support for your efforts!

IV. Fear of the world [or more specifically parents, relatives and significant others] seeing some not too attractive aspects of the personality of life. If your life and escapades are such that you’d be embarrassed, ashamed or fired if anyone that knows you were to read about it, then write under an alias [most people do anyway]! Change enough of what you’re sharing so as to not look like yourself. On the other hand, since you’ve done such a great job of hiding this ‘oh-so-juicy wild’ side of your persona from those that know you, they won’t know it’s you anyway! Change the names to protect the innocent and preserve identity security, etc.

V. And the biggest fear is getting started! Tit’s best to get started by researching ways to get paid for blogging, writing articles or emailing. Then read some blogs, articles and sample monetized emails [those can be gotten by opting in to any newsletter mailing list found at the sites you visit] and get a feel for the styles, topics, and ‘candidness’ they offer. For me, after reading a few ‘featured’ blogs and ‘award winning’ articles, I was floored with the thought, “I can do THAT!” and I stopped making excuses for not writing for money.

Experience is the best teacher because those lessons are ‘lived’ as opposed to ‘memorized.’ Then, too, the voice of experience can also be a great teacher for those that would rather take the path less filled with potholes, boulders and dead ends! As someone that has been writing something since I first learned to write a sentence, it feels exceptionally gratifying to pen my thoughts, observations, musings and expertise for pay. Which is exactly the reason I’m finding less and less time to talk on the phone: when I’m not writing about the things I see in life, I’m busy living my life so I can see things!
