Recognizing The Entrepreneur Within

I’ve always been independent minded. First born of 4 children and with a single mom, I had quite a bit of reponsibility for helping out at an early age. Responsiblity is no stranger to me, neither is being compensated for a job well done — my mother made sure she gave me an allowance out of her meager earnings long before I was 10 years old! Naturally, by the time I went to high school [at the age of 14] wanting to wear the latest trend [girls were now allowed to wear pants!] motivated me to earn ‘extra’ money above my allowance — which had increased substantially. So I took a summer job babysitting my music teacher’s only child — a great job for a very wonderful family!

No stranger to ‘getting a job’ it seemed I possessed some type of magic during lean times, layoffs and down sizings. When not working a ‘9-to-5′ I had some type of ‘hustle’ to earn legitimate income, however, I never considered myself as being ’self-employed’ or even ‘my own boss’ material. For decades I watched friends with businesses and/or full time paying ‘hustles’ [band members, pro-am sports atheletes, 'gamers,' etc.] and thought they possessed some magic that caused them to believe in their abilities to generate the income required to support themselves in their chosen lifestyles. I remember wondering what was it about them that made them so self-assured and capable, especially since I only had short ’stints’ of supporting myself and young family while taking a six-month to 1-year break from ‘working.’

Through the years and the varied corporations/fields that I’ve worked in, I began realizing that I was as smart and capable as all my co-workers and the majority of my supervisers. Still augmenting my income with side-jobs of my own design, I longed to ‘be my own boss’ one day. I truly wanted to know the formula or ingredient that it took to be successful in business.

In 2006 I took my savings, quit my ‘job’ and moved cross country with the intent to begin a new career as an independent tax preparer. It was a good idea in the wrong market and I didn’t make the amount of money that I wanted, although I made some invaluable contacts in the process. Yet, that illusive ‘it’ that others in the parent company had that were making substantial earnings appeared to be a deficit within me.

With 2008 winding down and amid national economic chaos, I’ve had the opportunity to realize I’ve always been an entrepreneur! Choosing the ways that I would make ‘extra’ cash; working in areas that afforded me mobility, high earnings and great hours along with the courage and determination to switch jobs/fields and move into newly developed arenas [website administration, etc.]  are all the qualities it takes to be self-employed.

The internet and the information age, combined with global access, creates infinite income possibilities and opportunities for EVERYONE that is able to recognize the Entrepreneur within. Take some time and assess your work ethic, skills, experience, motivation and determination levels. Have you ever been told you are the best at anything you enjoy doing? Has anyone ever requested you to bring a winning recipe to a gathering or event? Do you have a passion that demands you perfect your command of it? If so, you possess exactly what it takes to get started in business for yourself!

Aside from writing, I’m still possessed of the ‘first born’ passion: looking at ways to get things done correctly and quickly; looking out for and helping those ‘coming up behind me’ and knowing that I am up to the challenge of being responsible/trust worthy in the process. When I say that ANYBODY can make a living and/or earn cash via the internet doing only what they WANT to do, you can certainly believe me — I’m real good at ‘walking the walk’ that I talk!

Making BIG Money Online!

Being Self Employed – Pre-Launch Steps 6-10

Now that you have enacted the first 5 Pre-Launch steps necessary prior to starting your home based or small office business you are ready for the next 5 steps.

  1. Decide on a space that you will work from. If working from home this means do not set up ’shop’ at the kitchen or dining room table! There is a definite psychology for success and one major aspect of that psychology is seeing yourself in the role that you desire to be. If you see yourself as a CEO of a thriving business then a dedicated space with a desk, file cabinet, chair and of course your pc is basic to the imagery necessary to motivate you while growing your enterprise. This space does not have to be an entire room, however it does need to be an area that is visibly set apart from other activities normal to the household routine.

  2. For many of us starting out on a shoe string budget acquiring office ‘furniture’ may not be possible right away. And a lot of newbie business people fail to see the physical benefit to managing their home workstation as ergonomically as possible from the start! There are quite a few ‘office’ supply stores in most major and many average sized cities: Office Depot; Office Max; CompUSA, etc. All of these stores offer modestly priced ’student’ desks and entry level task or executive chairs. One can also check the surplus warehouse of the local school district, community college and/or university, etc. There’s also Craig’s List and local newspaper classified ads, flea markets and yard sales to seek QUALITY inexpensive items for your office. Having ‘office’ furniture, especially a sturdy and ergonomically designed chair, will assist you in directing your body’s energy into the work at hand as opposed to trying to keep itself upright or alert when in an unnatural or uncomfortable position for hours on end.

  3. If you don’t have a cordless phone handset that can be placed on your desk look into purchasing an expensive one OR investigate whether your cable/phone company offers a cheap VOIP service with your subscription. VOIP allows you to take and make calls through your computer. A good FREE VOIP service is SKYPE, however it’s only good for communicating with others that have the SKYPE software on their computers. SKYPE does offer annual contracts for unlimited outgoing and incoming calls and a combination package can cost as little as $60 per year! Having a phone or VOIP service at your desk will allow you to work without having to break your ‘rhythm’ to search for a ringing phone!

  4. Lighting is of major importance and being close to a window will give you optimum benefit for eye health – taking a few moments every 30 – 45 minutes to look outside give the eyes much needed exercise and also aids the body in staying grounded to the ‘real world’ outside of work. Table/desk lamps are surprisingly affordable and can be purchased for under $10 at any of the office stores mentioned above or even Target and WalMart.

  5. Set your office hours! Another major psychological aspect for successfully transitioning into any new task is taking yourself seriously. Setting your office hours AND going to your desk and doing something at the ‘appointed’ time proves to your ‘doubting’ self that you ARE serious and determined to BE successful as a self-employed person!

For those of you that are planning on launching your business from a small office space – whether solo or shared – choosing quality furnishings are just as important as for those working from home. So all of the points apply except for dedicating a space in your living quarters.

There are a few more steps that need to be addressed before hanging out your ‘open for business’ sign and I’ll be sharing those later this week. Some of you might think that you will AND may need to make office furniture purchases once money starts coming in, etc. While often that may be a necessity, don’t be lulled into the easy trap of putting off taking care of your personal health and balance until a ‘better’ time. The way in which we take care of our basic needs and health reflects just how well we will take care of ourselves during the high stress time of launching a business – most of us don’t have any guarantee that we’ll be successful in business – teaching yourself to TRUST that you’re responsible for the GOOD and the unexpected can only come from implementing basic sound actions of ‘taking care of business’ at the start. Go ahead and buy that chair that’s marked down to $39.99 – you can write it off next year’s taxes!

Ready, Set, GO! - The Internet Business Success Story

Being Self-Employed – 5 Final Pre-Launch Steps

Get Ready, Set, GO!

Now that you’ve assessed your readiness and acquired your business ’space’ you are ready for the final countdown towards being in business for yourself! Now, for the most part this series of steps is for preparation for a successful ONLINE/INTERNET business or enterprise. However, mastery of ALL the Pre-Launch steps will firmly position anyone in a winning position for a successful entry into self-employment.

The Final 5 Pre-Launch Steps addresses ‘technical’ as well as ‘book keeping’ matters and actually are designed to bring some mental relief to those that are ready to get started.

  1. Make sure that your PC or Laptop can handle daily use of up to 16 hours per day. Now, you may be thinking ‘WHAT does THAT mean?’ Because it does sound a bit strange, even to me. . . Ok, your pc or laptop needs to be able to access the internet; upload graphics [pictures], videos, sounds/tunes and, of course, text; and there needs to be a ’secure’ area on your pc or laptop to store customers’ or clients’ personal information [Privacy Act]. Your ‘processor’ and internet connection needs to be fast enough to upload the great website that you’re going to build or have someone build for you. If your processor has a 1+ ghz speed or is duo-core you have enough ‘power’ to get started. If you know how to password protect files and have a large amount of space on your hard drive then your pc or laptop can handle all that’s mentioned here.

  2. If you are SHARING a pc or laptop be prepared to purchase a separate hard drive for your business and all of your business information. I recommend buying a 500 GB [gigabyte] external drive [generally marketed as a 'back up' drive ] that is USB compatible. You can easily get by with 250 or 350 gigs of storage space to begin with but less than that will only cause you to have to ‘upgrade’ within a year [because YOUR business will grow so swiftly it'll demand more space!]. Being in a position of having the skill to build desktop systems puts me at an advantage to the average entry level entrepreneur because, I can throw an internal hard drive into my system at any time. . . Or simply build another box [I LOVE putting desktop pc systems together! :) ] However, if you’re starting out with a laptop and/or limited financial resources you can purchase a 500 GB external hard drive for $99 and less, if you shop carefully and watch the electronics’ sales. The privacy aspect of a separate hard drive cannot be overstressed and may well be the topic of a future article. . . .

  3. Purchase some accounting software that has invoicing capabilities. I have no recommendations on the ‘best’ of these softwares – I’ve worked with most of them, don’t like accounting at all, so they all are more or less the same to me! You can also download for FREE a copy of QuickBooks Simple Start which has a great set of the most important features needed to manage your business in the beginning.

  4. While it is wise to already have decided what form your business will take, i.e., sole proprietorship, limited liability corporation, etc. that isn’t a necessity for tax purposes. You can start your business, make tons of money and file your taxes as a ‘person/individual’ utilizing a ‘Schedule C’ reporting form that reports your business earnings and losses. See your tax advisor/attorney OR visit the IRS website for additional information. Also, it is a good idea to have an independent tax preparer handle your tax paperwork as opposed to a ‘chain’ tax prep agent because an independent can and usually will give your small business more personal AND detailed attention. JMHO

  5. When choosing a host for your internet business website make sure you choose one that offers an ‘eCommerce’ package as one of the perks. If you plan on using your current internet provider and they offer a free home page OR if you already have a home page & domain name then you can utilize a FREE e-commerce software package called OS Commerce. There are many free e-commerce marketplaces and websites that you can use which may be simpler than learning how to install and utilize a new software along with starting a new business. [Please Note: I have not used OS Commerce – yet.]

Once you have ‘checked off’ all of these 5 and the previous 10 Pre-Launch steps from your ‘to do’ list you are ready to start your business. Now, you may or may not have your own domain name, website, hosting company, etc. and those are topics for an entirely different article(s) to come! However, if you can get online – which is probably how you are able to read this article – then you ARE in position to launch your business and expect success based upon the firm foundation which YOU have built, ‘brick by brick’ via these ‘15 Pre-Launch Steps’ and tips.

How To Create a Billion Dollar Internet Business

Being Self Employed – How To Set-up a Business Website

Steps 1, 2 and 3

For those of you that have been following the series, “Being Self Employed. . .” with the 15 Pre-Launch steps systematically checked off of your ‘to do’ list, the creation of your online presence is the next order of business.

The numbers 3 and 5 figure prominently in my life: born in the 3rd month, on the 15th day in a year that ends with both the numbers 3 and 5 ‘kinda’ marks me for being in resonant affinity with those numbers. Which is probably why my ’steps’ often come to mind in blocks of 5. . . . For this particular series, the business website, in order to keep things simple [Keep It Simple Sweetie – KISS] there will be 3 steps to each aspect of successfully creating your web presence. That being said, let’s get started!

  1. Create a memorable and/or distinctive domain name. If you already have a following of customers for your home based or small business then by ALL means use the business name that is familiar to them. For example: you offer ‘in home’ pet sitting to people in your neighborhood and their families and friends. Generally you work 2 and 3 day weekends but are now ready to add week long ‘pet house sitting’ to your services. The city that you live in has a population of 100,000 and there are 10 pet shops that you frequent and you’re known at the local SPCA. You do some advertising by fliers, most of which are posted on public message boards around your neighborhood and your local library branch. All of your customers and potential customers know your service as ‘Annie Meyna – Pet Sitting at Your Service.’ Looking to acquire the domain name, AnnieMeyna.com would be an extremely wise first choice. I advise my customers to look also in the ‘.net,’ ‘.biz,’ and ‘.org’ domains for availability before giving up on the desired domain name. However, it is a good idea to have 2 – 5 alternate names, as ‘catchy’ or unique as possible, when doing your domain name search.

  2. Conduct a domain name search. Of course if there are some domain names that you’d like to use, knowing if they’re available requires a domain name search. MOST web hosting sites offer ‘free’ domain name searches. You simply type in the desired name into the search box and within a minute it’s availability is returned for your further decision making. Also, you can go to WHOIS, DomainSearch, and Name Droppers which are domain name search engines and purchase/registration services. [Please note that I am not affiliated with nor recommending doing business with either of the aforementioned entities.]

  3. Select a reputable hosting service. The web is FULL of web hosting companies and/or affiliates thereof. I am an affiliate for a few hosting services. I also own 2 domains and they are both hosted by different companies – neither of which I’m an affiliate of! Go figure. . . For my initial web host ’shopping’ I looked for services that had the lowest initial yearly cost, unlimited email accounts, unlimited sub-domains and 24/7 support services [although it appears that 24/7 only exists in alternate universes. . . .]. For the first year I received all of what I was looking for along with a pretty good control panel and some nice administrative ‘amenities’ [which means freebies that really add to the competitiveness of your site] all for under $25.00. In order to decide the type of control panel will be easiest for you to learn, you’ll have to contact the ’sales’ department of the potential host and inquire as to what their ‘back end’ or administrative control panel is. It appears that there are some control panel options that are fairly well used in the hosting communities such as VDeck, cPanel, etc. By clicking the links to VDeck and cPanel and reading the documentation, taking the tours, etc you can get a fair assessment for their ease of use. Certainly you can search the internet for ‘control panel software’ and come up with some additional options. At first the control panel wasn’t a major issue for me because I was determined to establish a web presence and I knew I’d learn to work whatever control panel I ended up with – it was a no brainer. NOW that I have brains, I want a really simple control panel that talks to me: says, Hello! when I log in; asks, How’s your day?; tells me my page hit stats and recommends new page layouts in line with the latest trends! That of course is something that some SUPER GEEK is working on this very moment and has yet to come to my attention, but I’m looking for it anyway. . . . In the meantime, do spend the time exploring the control panels offered by the hosting services that meet YOUR major criteria – doing so will give you a competitive edge in the do-it-yourself web management/design arena.

The best thing that I have found about surfing the internet for information, especially via articles and blogs, is most of what I want [in some cases wanted – when I run into a snag] to do has been done by some very intelligent, kind and sharing individuals AND is easily found when the right ‘keywords’ are entered into a search engine. And in light of all that I have gained by way of instruction, encouragement and plain old amusement on the world wide web, I trust that YOU are receiving note worthy assistance by way of reading my articles and blogs! Giving and Receiving is actually what makes the world a great place to be – for in the long run, and often in the short run, the good hearted giving is received and passed on in kind!

Taking the time to research domain names, site hosting and site management, which is what you’re about to engage in, is one of the most important investments you can make into your online business. Preparing for success is just like learning to walk – once you get your balance you can take off with ease!

The Best Online Business is YOURS

Being Self Employed – How To Set-up a Business Website

Steps 4, 5 and 6

Alright! You’ve got your first choice in domain names, a top notch – dirt cheap web hosting company selected WITH a simple to use control panel all with very little hassle except for narrowing down your choices! With that accomplished you may only be reading this next installation for amusement purposes or even to pick up a few tips you hadn’t thought of! For the rest of us, here are the next 3 important steps to setting up an award winning business website:

  1. Decide on the design style and layout. Most of us know what web sites catch our attention and which don’t! It’s a wise practice to search online for sites offering the same types of products or services that you have to sell. Why???? So that you can see and note any trends – in order to ’stand out’ in a crowd you first have to know what the crowd is ‘wearing!’ Once you’ve checked out the ‘norm,’ you have a good list of design ideas that you DO want on your site and that you DON’T want to imitate! I recommend visiting at least 10 sites to really see a comprehensive display in your business category.

  2. Invest in site design software. If you’ve already ’signed on the dotted line’ with a web hosting company that offers a simple build-it-yourself software package in its control panel then you’re ahead of the site design software issue. Web site design software comes in 3 very distinct levels: Simple – which often isn’t really simple but has very little room for customization and or design ‘freedom; Basic – which costs any where from $19.95 to $200 and offers lots of templates, graphics, web objects [flash files – you know the web pages that slide words and pictures into place, etc.], audio and video capacity, etc. and ‘Techie‘ [which is MY name for the type, you may call it something different such as 'advanced,' 'professional,' or 'expert'] – Techie software offers everything that Basic offers with the added abilities to take quite a bit of time to learn and master where the trade off comes in building a super top notch site that rivals Canon, Sprint or even Greyhound! I have an affinity for Serif WebPlus [Basic], for it’s ease of use and outstanding tutorials, templates and ‘add-ons!’ I’ve also used Microsoft Publisher [2003 version] and recommend any number of low cost WYSIWYG [What You See Is What You Get] software offered at any local Office Depot, Office Max, Best Buy or Circuit City, etc.. There are also great quality Simple and Basic wysiwyg software offerings for FREE listed at TuCows, SnapFiles or The Free Site to name a few freeware/shareware sites. For those of you that are ‘method based’ in your business approach the freeware/shareware is the way to go: you can download free demo trials AND unlimited use software that may prove to be simple and to the point for a very good start off website design. For the ’savvy shopper’ such as myself, the freeware/shareware sites are my first stop to find test software and templates in order to get a true picture of what my sites can look like. . . .

  3. Investigate some of the FREE web hosting sites – they offer a variety of easy-to-use site templates and extras such as site counters, blogs, forums, forms, shopping carts, etc. There is generally a limited amount of pages that can be hosted on these sites but since you’re creating an entry level site for the most part, this option can be the best and easily affordable one for many. Some free web hosting services are: BlinkWeb, MyHosting24/7, eSmartStart and WebNG. Thousands if not millions of start up internet businesses as well as established small and online businesses utilize FREE web hosting services AND once your business outgrows the limitations of the bandwidth or number pages [you'll be adding so many products and new services due to your phenomenal success!] copying and moving your site to a dedicated paid hosting service will be virtually ‘child’s play!’ As an incentive many of the free hosting services offer the ‘free’ sites with hopes that once the need arises customers will upgrade to their paid accounts – and if you are comfortable with the backend [control panel] along with the customer support or whatever that the free account gives you then upgrading is one way of ‘giving back’ to the provider!

For me, knowing my options and becoming familiar with those options is a prime factor in decision making – I not only like HAVING a road map, I like having a general idea of what’s ON the map before I set off on the road! Such is the reward of living long enough to have garnered some wisdom after being a very young and impulsive ‘youth!’ Gone are the days of having a vague notion of where point ‘b’ is and breaking out in a blaze of smoke without knowing whether or not the roads to ‘Rome’ were under construction. . . . .

So, I could have listed the free software and site hosting services first, however, without being given the impetus to think about where you want your site to take your business, that would have been just another ‘hype’ bit of info which is all too prevalent online these days. Which leads me to another great parting shot: Take your time and read between the lines – it’s your life, time and business AND only YOU can do it justice!

Clear Channel’s Competition Getting Stronger: Monetized Websites

In the US alone, home-based business is a $427 billion dollar industry! Of that staggering generated income amount, $5000+/- per month or approximately $4.2 billion is generated via paid advertising on monetized websites for home based and small businesses.

With ever expanding IT or internet technology advances, the financial services industry [bankers, capital investors, etc.] are partnering with IT in order to seek out, fund and sponsor the present and newly forming high profile online small and home based businesses! Thus the internet’s streamlined automation creates a highly competitive, extremely lucrative entrepreneur sales channel.

Many individuals seeking to establish an online presence and/or seeking to promote their online business are benefiting from networking coalitions or collaborations via forums, newsgroups and portals. Sur-Bet Global Enterprise Network [SBGEN] serves as a small business information, consulting, networking and advertising portal.

Advertising spending has increased dramatically in recent years. In 2006, spending on advertising has been estimated at $155 billion in the United States and $385 billion worldwide, with the latter to exceed $500 billion by 2010. SBGEN offers FREE business listings to the first 100 home based and small businesses that sign up for membership. Members also have access to the Global Business Community Forum [GBC Forum] for networking, training, information and general observation sharing.

For entrepreneurs seeking webinars, teleconferences and on-site trainings or events there is an ‘Events‘ section that lists FREE traditional sources and accepts listings from the general public that offers FREE services to member start-ups and businesses.

SBGEN also provides listings of Affiliate Marketing and Passive Income Generation Programs for those seeking entry level guidance and information to internet e Commerce.

Recognizing that not all site visitors are entrepreneurs, SBGEN also hosts a “Fantastic Products Showcase” that offers discounts and/or low prices for more than 1,500,000 different products in all categorizes.

The website is atypical presenting a colorful, warm, quiet and inviting format lacking in many high profile profit-by-visitor sites seeking to amass thousands of visitors without thought for basic customer service human contact protocols.

SBGEN founder YEisHere is available for interview. She appears frequently on local/national internet radio and entrepreneur portals. You can arrange an interview or obtain additional further information by calling Margo Mausz @ 386-754-6868.
