Natural Eye Remedy that won’t get re-called

Working long hours in front of a computer screen, be it a desk or lap top, can prove extremely taxing on the eyes. I haven’t done any research into the matter of late, however I’m sure that vision is affected negatively when one doesn’t follow a strict routine of looking away from the screen every 30 to 45 minutes, staring out a window [preferably into the sun for 30 seconds or less] or even getting up from the desk/table and looking off in the far away distant future in order to give the eyes a chance to do some distance focusing.

While preparing for my Holistic Health Certification exam, one of the topics discussed were ‘quick fixes’ for common imbalances to assist clients with getting relief simply and effectively. I remember clearly how my instructor, looked me square in the eyes and said, “. . . and for common eye problems a few drops of vitamin E into each eye helps them to heal. . .” In that moment my first reactive thought was, “How do you get a few drops of vitamin E into someone’s eye?” and I resumed taking notes and paying attention to the rest of the lecture.

Recently, after embarking on my electronic authoring campaign, namely blogging and/or article writing for the internet audience, I started violating all of the eye rest rules that I had religiously implemented when working in the corporate world. I began putting in 13, 16 and far too many 24 hour days — the majority spent in front of a computer monitor that I stepped away from only for water refills [I keep a 32 ounce glass juice bottle close at hand full of filtered/energized water], bathroom and occasional meal breaks. Needless to say that by the third week of this grueling pace my eyes began to loose focus, tear and burn terribly. It is said that physicians make the worst patients and I must confess that as a healer, I often fall into that mental abyss. . . Since I routinely ingest the herb Eyebright, and almost daily include blueberries into my smoothies [I eat them by the cupfuls when in season] I had to really scrounge through my mental archives for additional eye health foods/supplements and the like.

Generally, when addressing my overall eye health I’ll make a tea consisting of Eyebright, St. Johnswort, Goldenseal and a little cayenne. While my favorite ‘eye tea’ was of benefit, the ongoing marathon wasn’t giving my eyes enough time to benefit from the usual ‘food.’ Then, after talking to one of my naturopath colleagues, Dr. Elijah Grant, I started adding the herb Chickweed to the brew. Chickweed is good for both the lungs and also the eyes and I had completely forgotten it’s use for eye health. So I added some chickweed along with some Passion Flower to the mixture. The Passion Flower is a calmative that I occasionally add to almost any formula in order to help the body relax enough to absorb whatever herbals it’s being fed. Naturally my eyes were able to utilize the additional herbs and began to look and feel much better, however that only encouraged me to put even more hours since I felt I had worked out a reasonable ‘neutralizing’ method for the warnings my eyes were giving me.

One day a few weeks ago, my eyes simply wouldn’t focus while sitting at my desk! I mean WOULD NOT focus at all. So I went outside into the back yard, glanced at the sky, walked around looking at the trees, grass, squirrels and pondering what was it that caused me to be so driven when doing something I love. . . In fact there are times when I can be driven in order to get something accomplished that I don’t like to do but must so I pull out all the stops and complete those type of tasks with a tunnel vision equal to Superman’s x-ray beam! As, I leisurely mused upon my current predicament, noticing that my vision was completely back to focus, I thought about the vitamin E in the eyeball statement. Again, I wondered how does one go about putting a few drops of vitamin E into an eye? Then I began wondering just how would the eye/eyes react to such a ‘greasy’ substance placed in them. That led me to thinking how vitamin E could help the eyes directly at all.

That type of thinking went on for about a day until I realized that I had to [sorely wanted to] get back to my writing work and the laptop was my tool of choice. One night before going to bed I decided to snip open a 400 IU capsule of vitamin E and drop a few drops into my eyes. Allow me to digress for a moment. . .

I blend oils for topical purposes There is a most scrumptious face oil that I’ve created that tones and feeds the face and has no scent at all. It has been said by many that my skin looks as young as my children’s and/or anyone in the 35 year old age range. Then there is the body oil which has some of the same basic face oil ingredients with the addition of oils to enhance elasticity along with a smidgen of 2 oils to repel insects and aid in swift healing of those bites from insects that are not repelled. I also have other blends. . . A very long time ago I read and agreed with the adage that it isn’t healthy or natural to eat anything with ingredients that you can’t pronounce or see growing in a field, garden, farm, etc. That also felt reasonable as far as body products usage. So my oils are 100% essential, organic, cold-pressed oils. And for my formulas I always buy vitamin E in capsules as this keeps the oil fresher over long periods of shelf life, hence the puzzle in my mind as to how to get the vitamin E into the eye. . .

Now, back to my eyes. . . Squeezing the little capsule into my left eye held open by my left hand proved to be a bit of a challenge — I missed the eyeball but got the oil onto the upper lashes which I simply used my left index finger to rub into the eye. I was about as successful with the right eye as with the left. To my surprise [and delight] my eyes immediately felt soothed and refreshed and not at all greasy. Of course I did fear that the vitamin E would be ‘heavier’ than the occasional water droplets experienced when showering, etc. however the oil proved to be much lighter and more comfortable than expected.

Upon awakening the next morning, my vision was clear, my eyes felt rested and there was no burning at all! Over the next few days, whenever my eyes lost focus, I’d put a few drops of vitamin E in them and take a walk — this because I was very much aware that I’d pushed them into a deficit over the past few months. Continuing my tea regimen and modifying my diet [I have a tendency to eat fewer cooked meals when needing some extensive healing], my eyes began to feel better on a daily basis. Then I got the idea to amp up to 1,000 IU capsules when I used the last of that 400 IU bottle. This proved to be extremely beneficial as I no longer needed to place any drops into my eye throughout the day!

Of course, I had to revisit the healing properties of vitamin E to see just what it does to assists in regenerating skin tissue and came across this article simply entitled, “Vitamin E.” In it there is information regarding eye conditions [cataracts and uveitis] and the positive benefits of ingesting vitamin E as a preventive to them. Needless to say, I didn’t find any articles advocating placing vitamin E in the eye nor am I advocating it here. . .

One most noticeable side effect of the eyeball vitamin E bath has been the almost total absence of eye ‘matter’ in my eyes upon waking from sleep! Another benefit has been a decrease in ‘itchy ear’ and nasal congestion that I also experienced upon waking every morning. This could be attributed to the fact that the sinus cavity houses the eyes and everything that enters the body ENTERS the body! Since vitamin E enhances red-blood cell production, which topically assists the skin tissues in repairing themselves, it is possible that the eyes and sinus apparatus have been able to take direct vitamin E applications and utilize them exclusively as opposed to having to get whate4ver ‘quotient’ from the general blood stream as had been the case. Actually, I can’t say since I’m not a scientist and honestly it isn’t important for me to know. . .

What is important is the fact that before I’d rush out and buy a commercial eye ‘wash’ or run to my opthomologist or even optometrist for a stronger eye glass prescription, utilizing a natural ingredient like vitamin E AND getting much needed relief and reversal of self induced eye inflammation and fatigue is a great and appreciated wonder. With the never ending drama of drug [prescription medications] recalls as alluded to in the online CNN article, “FDA posts list of drugs under investigation” and/or drugs being found to be dangerous only after so many suffering citizens have died seeking relief, my vitamin E treatments actually seems to be quite a minior miracle. AND now I know how to get vitamin E into an eye — one drop at a time, at night before going to bed or during the day just before taking a break from reading or working at the computer!

Making a great living via the internet isn’t going to be much fun if you loose your vision in the process. Protect your eyes with frequent breaks, organic raw leafy green foods and vitamin supplementation. Health IS Wealth.

The At Home Executive: Power Drinks

This has been a somewhat slow paced week – not that there wasn’t a million and one things to do as usual – I simply decided to mind my own Holistic Health information and coast along getting items completed while I took advantage of working from home.

From time to time, as I grow older, I get in mode of not wanting to take the time to ‘chew’ as in eat solid food, for sustenance. This feeling is what prompted me to become very good at creating energizing high impact juice blends and smoothies. However the foundation of the recipe for the juice part of this post, credit goes to a ’sistah friend’ of mine, chef/caterer HuNia of HuNia’s Divine Soul Kitchen in Oakland, California.

The breakfast juice blend consists of the following:

  • 3 med carrots

  • 1 med beet

  • 4 med radishes

  • 3 cloves garlic

  • ¼ tsp cayenne

Making sure all of your vegetables are organic, scrub each carefully removing all dirt and possible insects. Depending on the model of juicer cut the vegetables in small enough sizes. Place some carrot, beet, radish and garlic together in the chamber, a bit at a time and juice until all of the vegetables are liquefied. Save the pulp. Pour the juice into a glass [this should make about 6 to 10 oz of juice] and stir in the cayenne.

Drink mindfully: take in a mouthful, swish it in your mouth and then swallow. The enzymes, vitamins and nutrients will be absorbed through the cells of the mouth, gums and tongue before instant absorption through the stomach into the bloodstream.

Now pulling our your blender take the remaining pulp and blend with the following:

  • 12 oz filtered or distilled water

  • 2 scoops Organic Hemp Protein powder

  • 1 tbsp Blue Green Algae [Spirulina or Chlorella can be used]

  • ½ tsp Vitamin C crystals [powder]

  • ¼ tsp cayenne

Blend on high until smooth about 40 seconds. Enjoy for lunch!

Take the liberty to add whatever herbs or supplements you feel your body is in need of in the smoothie – poor digestion is the leading cause of most disease, since health begins in the colon and undigested food particles puts the body on alert against invasion!

Treating yourself to these 2 Power Drinks will energize your blood [beets have the highest amount of absorbable iron] and allow the stomach to rest and regenerate itself. Live long AND prosper!

Give Yourself The Executive Treatment: Home Spa Health Tips

Working from home often appears to be all fun and games to those that seek to be self-employed and/or those that feel they must work for someone else. In far too many cases, entrepreneurs have a higher stress level when it comes to being ‘accountable’ for producing profits in order to support themselves, family and often employees. The position of responsibility for making the whole thing ‘go’ as opposed to being a part of a ‘going’ operation is extremely challenging for those that are newly entering the self-employment arena either by choice or due to being downsized from gainful employment else where.

Yet, there is great satisfaction in being an ‘executive’ and ‘boss’ of one’s own income generating mechanism: self respect for a job well done, even in the beginning stages, cannot be over exaggerated. For those that are in the first 3 years of working from home or being self employed in a small business, there is often a tight budget and rarely instant overnight riches. However, the need for executive level pampering in the form of healthy relaxation and regeneration ‘treatments’ are a critical part of the best ‘business plans’ for those seeking to stay in business!

As a Certified Health Consultant the awareness that Health Is Wealth is always foremost in my consultations with clients and customers. Although my journey into self-pampering began in my youth with the ‘luxuriating’ gifts of bubble bath, body powder and cologne sets from my mother, the practicality of home spa techniques has evolved into a viable recommendation for all, especially those with limited funds and great emotional as well as physical demands. Luckily, we are living in an age where some of the most healing tools for home spa use are very reasonably priced and easily accessible to all!

  1. Shower Filter. Chlorine displays neurotoxic properties, especially in its gaseous form. So, while taking a shower may feel good to the muscles and mind, often it is causing unseen/undetected damage to the lungs and internal organs as it is inhaled/absorbed into the body. There are numerous shower water filters on the market, some that filter out many more deleterious elements than chlorine and others that focus only on chlorine. It doesn’t matter how ‘up scale’ the filter is as long as it removes chlorine from your shower water. Showering in filtered water actually re-hydrates the body as you bathe and that is an added plus!

  2. Massage Shower Head. Here too, there are countless models available in a very wide price range: the good thing is it isn’t important how much you pay for your shower head ESPECIALLY once you’ve installed the filter because the focus is to get a good ‘massage’ via focused streams of water against the muscles of your body! Starting your shower with the temperature as warm as you can stand, then turning the massage head to focused streams as you soap up [and hopefully turn, stretch and bend] assists the blood in flowing to the surface of the skin while the pressure of the water stimulates the muscles, tendons and tissues causing enhanced blood flow as well.

  3. Foot Bath. Again, these can be found at most any drug store and even some major home improvement stores at reasonable investment costs. For a true executive treatment, get a foot bath that ‘bubbles’ and has massaging elements for your feet to rest upon. Sitting at a desk all day [working on a computer] causes the blood to often drain to the feet and become stagnant: almost everyone has experienced tired, swollen feet at the end of a 10 hour day where serious deadlines have had to be met. A good massaging foot bath helps to draw toxins out of the feet while stimulating precious blood flow. With the addition of a little essential oil [lavender, peppermint or tea tree] the foot bath becomes a healing, soothing treatment that literally imparts peace to the mind!

While scheduling your week’s duties and tasks to be accomplished to keep your business in the ‘black’ make sure to calendar in some executive level pampering – it’ll help your body retain it’s youthful exuberance while reinforcing to yourself that you are, indeed, The CEO!
