Drum roll: Presenting the REAL You!

It’s that time of year: shorter days, longer evenings/nights, parties and Halloween! And while I’ve long since retired from the Halloween overnight parties that I hosted for my 2 young children, there’s something about the ability to dawn an alternate persona via a costume that has called me to muse upon my current stage of life!

Everywhere I go signs of the pending masquerade that Halloween brings demands my attention — well in fact the decorations, packages of candy and pumpkins demand EVERYONE’S attention! This is definitely a time to do some online shopping for those wanting to avoid crowds and the pawned over costumes in stores! Thinking about my internet ventures and offerings for others wishing to be successful in eCommerce, I decided to visit one such eCommerce site, that provided Halloween Costumes!

As I looked over the offerings, I was amazed at how many Star Wars costumes were offered — for some reason I thought Star Wars was old news and some other blockbuster film or film series would dominate. . . Browsing thru page after page of ‘new age’ costumes, nothing quite fit my current life style or alternate ego! For some reason, I began thinking about a doctor’s costume, as my Holistic Health training certainly does position me to hear quite a few ‘maladies’ from those that I meet and know! I didn’t see any medical themed costumes, most likely because I didn’t search far enough  as I came upon a costume that actually sparked both childhood memories AND parallel images of my current attitude!

Black Roaring 20s Flapper Dress

Black Roaring 20s Flapper Dress

According to Wikipedia, the “Roaring 20s’ was an expansive cultural era for women: Jazz, bobbed haircuts, short skirts/dresses and a distinct departure from ‘acceptable’ social behavior! I REMEMBER seeing movies on TV, as a child, that glorified the 20s! Doing the ‘Charleston’ and the other dances the 20s were famous for was a joyous and invigorating exercise in fantasy! The women portrayed in those films were ‘cool’ and definitely in control of their lives as they embraced the times with flourish and passion!

Today is a ‘roaring’ era in our history! The internet boasts a $3 trillion dollar commerce flow; personal blogs earn anywhere from $100s to $40,000 per month and ANYONE can monetize their website and make a very decent living! The excitement of eCommerce is intoxicating and the oppurtunites boundless — just like the promise of continued womens empowerment presented during the ‘roaring 20s!’

Take a stroll and look at some Halloween Costumes! See what your current ‘fantasies’ translate into costume/theme wise! I utterly enjoyed seeing what is popular these days as compared to what I remember seeing when my children were young or even when I was a child!

After your tour of ‘imagery’ lane, give some creative thought to “presenting the REAL You!” Then throw on your cape and take on the world!

Recognizing The Entrepreneur Within

I’ve always been independent minded. First born of 4 children and with a single mom, I had quite a bit of reponsibility for helping out at an early age. Responsiblity is no stranger to me, neither is being compensated for a job well done — my mother made sure she gave me an allowance out of her meager earnings long before I was 10 years old! Naturally, by the time I went to high school [at the age of 14] wanting to wear the latest trend [girls were now allowed to wear pants!] motivated me to earn ‘extra’ money above my allowance — which had increased substantially. So I took a summer job babysitting my music teacher’s only child — a great job for a very wonderful family!

No stranger to ‘getting a job’ it seemed I possessed some type of magic during lean times, layoffs and down sizings. When not working a ‘9-to-5′ I had some type of ‘hustle’ to earn legitimate income, however, I never considered myself as being ’self-employed’ or even ‘my own boss’ material. For decades I watched friends with businesses and/or full time paying ‘hustles’ [band members, pro-am sports atheletes, 'gamers,' etc.] and thought they possessed some magic that caused them to believe in their abilities to generate the income required to support themselves in their chosen lifestyles. I remember wondering what was it about them that made them so self-assured and capable, especially since I only had short ’stints’ of supporting myself and young family while taking a six-month to 1-year break from ‘working.’

Through the years and the varied corporations/fields that I’ve worked in, I began realizing that I was as smart and capable as all my co-workers and the majority of my supervisers. Still augmenting my income with side-jobs of my own design, I longed to ‘be my own boss’ one day. I truly wanted to know the formula or ingredient that it took to be successful in business.

In 2006 I took my savings, quit my ‘job’ and moved cross country with the intent to begin a new career as an independent tax preparer. It was a good idea in the wrong market and I didn’t make the amount of money that I wanted, although I made some invaluable contacts in the process. Yet, that illusive ‘it’ that others in the parent company had that were making substantial earnings appeared to be a deficit within me.

With 2008 winding down and amid national economic chaos, I’ve had the opportunity to realize I’ve always been an entrepreneur! Choosing the ways that I would make ‘extra’ cash; working in areas that afforded me mobility, high earnings and great hours along with the courage and determination to switch jobs/fields and move into newly developed arenas [website administration, etc.]  are all the qualities it takes to be self-employed.

The internet and the information age, combined with global access, creates infinite income possibilities and opportunities for EVERYONE that is able to recognize the Entrepreneur within. Take some time and assess your work ethic, skills, experience, motivation and determination levels. Have you ever been told you are the best at anything you enjoy doing? Has anyone ever requested you to bring a winning recipe to a gathering or event? Do you have a passion that demands you perfect your command of it? If so, you possess exactly what it takes to get started in business for yourself!

Aside from writing, I’m still possessed of the ‘first born’ passion: looking at ways to get things done correctly and quickly; looking out for and helping those ‘coming up behind me’ and knowing that I am up to the challenge of being responsible/trust worthy in the process. When I say that ANYBODY can make a living and/or earn cash via the internet doing only what they WANT to do, you can certainly believe me — I’m real good at ‘walking the walk’ that I talk!

Priority #1: Promoting Your Internet Business

Setting up a top notch business website, offering high demand, quality goods and services simply isn’t enough to establish a steady flow of traffic to your site! Contrary to the highly acclaimed movie made in the 80s, if you build it they will NOT come – unless you advertise, promote and get the word out that you HAVE ‘built it’ and are ready to expertly serve your targeted customer base.

Since this ‘Being Self-Employed’ series of postings is basically directed at those that are both new to entrepreneurship and to internet business, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss marketing your online presence utilizing free resources. One relatively simple way to get accustomed to web marketing is to join ad or link exchange sites: this allows for you to get some exposure of your site AND view the ads of others in whatever system you join so that you can compare your site, your marketing strategies, your products, etc.

A few of the systems that I’ve reviewed [and some I've even used] are listed here. Each site has a slightly different ‘hook’, however, the main thing to keep in mind is gaining the experience of marketing your site WHILE exposing it to others – for FREE!

ASD Cash Generator: this is a system wherein you’re allowed to list several different websites [that you own] in order to place them in the ad ‘rotation’ with other member businesses. Interestingly, not all the businesses are ‘online,’ so ASD (Ad Surf Daily) Cash Generator also serves as a viable marketing tool for any type of business wanting exposure. The free membership requires you view 20 – 30 sites per login in order to accrue points which then are alloted to your sites. The points amount to the number of times your site(s) will be viewed by other members, so the more sites you view, the more points you generate and the more YOUR site is viewed by other ’surfers!’ ASD also has a paid ‘upgrade’ that I find to be rather expensive and other than putting your business into the rotation more frequently, I’m not convinced it is worth the cost. . .

AdFactory: this system boasts 1,000,000 free ads without the need for a membership upgrade. It is similar to ASD except it doesn’t require you surf any number of pages per day (or even at all!). Members place banner ads and/or text ads on their websites that promote AdFactory, which in turn allows people that click on member banner ads and/or text to view YOUR AdFactory page which promotes your advertised website prominently! After more than a month of membership, my stats showed only 8 ad views and 1 click thru. . . I’m not sure what happened to my 1 million free ads – perhaps it adds up over the course of membership. . .

BannersMania: here there are a few extremely helpful features: free banner creation for members, I find this to be very useful for anyone not having a clue as to how to create a banner [namely yours truly a few months ago]!; and free text link exchanges which helps to build search engine ranking.

As I find more useful [and even not so useful] sites I’ll report back and share the information with you. While ‘they’ may not come simply if you ‘build it,’ there ARE ways in which to let ‘them’ know where you are and become loyal customers!

Making BIG Money Online!

Being Self Employed – Pre-Launch Steps 6-10

Now that you have enacted the first 5 Pre-Launch steps necessary prior to starting your home based or small office business you are ready for the next 5 steps.

  1. Decide on a space that you will work from. If working from home this means do not set up ’shop’ at the kitchen or dining room table! There is a definite psychology for success and one major aspect of that psychology is seeing yourself in the role that you desire to be. If you see yourself as a CEO of a thriving business then a dedicated space with a desk, file cabinet, chair and of course your pc is basic to the imagery necessary to motivate you while growing your enterprise. This space does not have to be an entire room, however it does need to be an area that is visibly set apart from other activities normal to the household routine.

  2. For many of us starting out on a shoe string budget acquiring office ‘furniture’ may not be possible right away. And a lot of newbie business people fail to see the physical benefit to managing their home workstation as ergonomically as possible from the start! There are quite a few ‘office’ supply stores in most major and many average sized cities: Office Depot; Office Max; CompUSA, etc. All of these stores offer modestly priced ’student’ desks and entry level task or executive chairs. One can also check the surplus warehouse of the local school district, community college and/or university, etc. There’s also Craig’s List and local newspaper classified ads, flea markets and yard sales to seek QUALITY inexpensive items for your office. Having ‘office’ furniture, especially a sturdy and ergonomically designed chair, will assist you in directing your body’s energy into the work at hand as opposed to trying to keep itself upright or alert when in an unnatural or uncomfortable position for hours on end.

  3. If you don’t have a cordless phone handset that can be placed on your desk look into purchasing an expensive one OR investigate whether your cable/phone company offers a cheap VOIP service with your subscription. VOIP allows you to take and make calls through your computer. A good FREE VOIP service is SKYPE, however it’s only good for communicating with others that have the SKYPE software on their computers. SKYPE does offer annual contracts for unlimited outgoing and incoming calls and a combination package can cost as little as $60 per year! Having a phone or VOIP service at your desk will allow you to work without having to break your ‘rhythm’ to search for a ringing phone!

  4. Lighting is of major importance and being close to a window will give you optimum benefit for eye health – taking a few moments every 30 – 45 minutes to look outside give the eyes much needed exercise and also aids the body in staying grounded to the ‘real world’ outside of work. Table/desk lamps are surprisingly affordable and can be purchased for under $10 at any of the office stores mentioned above or even Target and WalMart.

  5. Set your office hours! Another major psychological aspect for successfully transitioning into any new task is taking yourself seriously. Setting your office hours AND going to your desk and doing something at the ‘appointed’ time proves to your ‘doubting’ self that you ARE serious and determined to BE successful as a self-employed person!

For those of you that are planning on launching your business from a small office space – whether solo or shared – choosing quality furnishings are just as important as for those working from home. So all of the points apply except for dedicating a space in your living quarters.

There are a few more steps that need to be addressed before hanging out your ‘open for business’ sign and I’ll be sharing those later this week. Some of you might think that you will AND may need to make office furniture purchases once money starts coming in, etc. While often that may be a necessity, don’t be lulled into the easy trap of putting off taking care of your personal health and balance until a ‘better’ time. The way in which we take care of our basic needs and health reflects just how well we will take care of ourselves during the high stress time of launching a business – most of us don’t have any guarantee that we’ll be successful in business – teaching yourself to TRUST that you’re responsible for the GOOD and the unexpected can only come from implementing basic sound actions of ‘taking care of business’ at the start. Go ahead and buy that chair that’s marked down to $39.99 – you can write it off next year’s taxes!

Ready, Set, GO! - The Internet Business Success Story

Being Self-Employed – 5 Final Pre-Launch Steps

Get Ready, Set, GO!

Now that you’ve assessed your readiness and acquired your business ’space’ you are ready for the final countdown towards being in business for yourself! Now, for the most part this series of steps is for preparation for a successful ONLINE/INTERNET business or enterprise. However, mastery of ALL the Pre-Launch steps will firmly position anyone in a winning position for a successful entry into self-employment.

The Final 5 Pre-Launch Steps addresses ‘technical’ as well as ‘book keeping’ matters and actually are designed to bring some mental relief to those that are ready to get started.

  1. Make sure that your PC or Laptop can handle daily use of up to 16 hours per day. Now, you may be thinking ‘WHAT does THAT mean?’ Because it does sound a bit strange, even to me. . . Ok, your pc or laptop needs to be able to access the internet; upload graphics [pictures], videos, sounds/tunes and, of course, text; and there needs to be a ’secure’ area on your pc or laptop to store customers’ or clients’ personal information [Privacy Act]. Your ‘processor’ and internet connection needs to be fast enough to upload the great website that you’re going to build or have someone build for you. If your processor has a 1+ ghz speed or is duo-core you have enough ‘power’ to get started. If you know how to password protect files and have a large amount of space on your hard drive then your pc or laptop can handle all that’s mentioned here.

  2. If you are SHARING a pc or laptop be prepared to purchase a separate hard drive for your business and all of your business information. I recommend buying a 500 GB [gigabyte] external drive [generally marketed as a 'back up' drive ] that is USB compatible. You can easily get by with 250 or 350 gigs of storage space to begin with but less than that will only cause you to have to ‘upgrade’ within a year [because YOUR business will grow so swiftly it'll demand more space!]. Being in a position of having the skill to build desktop systems puts me at an advantage to the average entry level entrepreneur because, I can throw an internal hard drive into my system at any time. . . Or simply build another box [I LOVE putting desktop pc systems together! :) ] However, if you’re starting out with a laptop and/or limited financial resources you can purchase a 500 GB external hard drive for $99 and less, if you shop carefully and watch the electronics’ sales. The privacy aspect of a separate hard drive cannot be overstressed and may well be the topic of a future article. . . .

  3. Purchase some accounting software that has invoicing capabilities. I have no recommendations on the ‘best’ of these softwares – I’ve worked with most of them, don’t like accounting at all, so they all are more or less the same to me! You can also download for FREE a copy of QuickBooks Simple Start which has a great set of the most important features needed to manage your business in the beginning.

  4. While it is wise to already have decided what form your business will take, i.e., sole proprietorship, limited liability corporation, etc. that isn’t a necessity for tax purposes. You can start your business, make tons of money and file your taxes as a ‘person/individual’ utilizing a ‘Schedule C’ reporting form that reports your business earnings and losses. See your tax advisor/attorney OR visit the IRS website for additional information. Also, it is a good idea to have an independent tax preparer handle your tax paperwork as opposed to a ‘chain’ tax prep agent because an independent can and usually will give your small business more personal AND detailed attention. JMHO

  5. When choosing a host for your internet business website make sure you choose one that offers an ‘eCommerce’ package as one of the perks. If you plan on using your current internet provider and they offer a free home page OR if you already have a home page & domain name then you can utilize a FREE e-commerce software package called OS Commerce. There are many free e-commerce marketplaces and websites that you can use which may be simpler than learning how to install and utilize a new software along with starting a new business. [Please Note: I have not used OS Commerce – yet.]

Once you have ‘checked off’ all of these 5 and the previous 10 Pre-Launch steps from your ‘to do’ list you are ready to start your business. Now, you may or may not have your own domain name, website, hosting company, etc. and those are topics for an entirely different article(s) to come! However, if you can get online – which is probably how you are able to read this article – then you ARE in position to launch your business and expect success based upon the firm foundation which YOU have built, ‘brick by brick’ via these ‘15 Pre-Launch Steps’ and tips.
